Artist Reception Joe Hernandez

January 20 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Join us from for the Artist Reception for Joe Hernandez.  His bows will be in the gallery from January – March.

Joe “Eddie” Hernandez, AKA Loco Pony, was born and raised in Marfa, a small community in far West Texas.  After high school he attended Angelo State University in San Angelo.  He received his teaching certificate in 1971 and taught school in Odessa for a total of 17 years.     As a youngster, he was fascinated with bows and arrows and always had a slingshot in his back pocket.  The love for the outdoors and hunting were factors in his desire and passion to learn how to make traditional bows.  This included making replicas of primitive bows and arrows.  He has hunted black bear in Virginia with his bow for the last 14 years.     In March of 2009, he answered an ad in a primitive archery magazine. Ed Scott, a renowned bowyer was advertising bow making classes in Grant, NM.  He attended his “one on one” bow making class and learned how to use numerous woods to make traditional bows.  These include Osage “bois d arc”, hickory, oak, yew, ash and many more.  He also utilizes bamboo.     In 2010, he went back to work with Ed Scott to learn how to make a “horn bow”.  Using horns of a Gemsbock deer, he made a unique, beautiful, and functional horn bow.  The process takes 6 months to finish a bow.     He teaches bow making classes in his shop in Odessa. We can make a bow in a weekend, or we can make one that takes months to complete.     My traditional bows will be on display at the Sibley Nature Center in Midland during the first quarter of 2026.
