Photo Contest: What you need to know.

The Sibley Nature Festival Photo Contest (“Photo Contest”) is open only to legal residents of the United States who are at least fifteen (15) years old. Trustees, Board Members, Employees, interns, or partners of Sibley Nature Center, as well as the immediate family (spouse, parents, siblings, and children) and household members of those employees, are not eligible to enter.

The Photo Contest is sponsored by Sibley Nature Center, 1307 E. Wadley Ave., Midland, Texas 79705 (“Sponsor”).

Entry Period

The Photo Contest begins at 8:00am CST on Feb. 15, 2017 and ends at 5:00pm CST on March 31, 2017 (the “Entry Period”). Entries submitted before or after the Entry Period will not be eligible. Sponsor’s computer is the official time-keeping device for the Photo Contest.

What to Enter

Submit photos within one of these categories: Wildlife and Places. Photos must have been taken within the Llano Estacado Region of Texas. See the map below for boundaries of the Llano Estacado.

To ensure eligibility for the contest, please submit high resolution files of at least 300 dpi/ppi. All photographs should accurately reflect the subject matter and the scene as it appeared. Photos that have been digitally altered beyond standard optimization (removal of dust, cropping, reasonable adjustments to exposure, color and contrast, etc.) will be disqualified.

Entries may originate in any format — including, but not limited to digital files, digital prints, color transparencies, color prints, or black and white prints — so long as they are submitted electronically in a .JPEG .jpg, or.png form. Multiple exposures that have been combined to produce a single "High Dynamic Range" image are acceptable.

Entries should include metadata if at all possible. Caption information should include:

  • Location
  • Name of location (ex: Sibley Nature Center)
  • Detailed caption of subject matter
  • Photographer's information as s/he would like to be recognized

Previously published material for which non-exclusive rights were granted may be entered as long as you still maintain the right to grant us a license. You must be able to disclose when and where the photo appeared previously to Sibley Nature Center upon request.

If you choose to include people in your submission, you are responsible for obtaining the necessary releases from the individuals depicted, and must be able to provide copies of those releases to Sibley Nature Center with your submission.

The following submissions are ineligible:

  • Photographs of pets or domestic animals.
  • Images of captive animals photographed in zoos and commercial game farms.
  • Photos that violate or infringe upon another person's rights, including but not limited to copyright.
  • Photos that contain sexually explicit, nude, obscene, violent or other objectionable or inappropriate content.
  • Images that involve the willful harassment of wildlife, or damage to the environment by the photographer.
  • Images that involve putting any individual or animal in danger.
  • Images taken more than three years prior to the beginning date of the Contest (February 1, 2017).

Sibley Nature Center shall determine entry eligibility in its sole and absolute discretion.

How to Enter

All images must be submitted via Dropbox to or by USB jump drive to Sibley Nature Center at 1307 E. Wadley Ave., Midland, Texas 79705. Included in the Dropbox submission or USB Drive shall be a Word or PDF document that includes the photographers contact information. If you choose to submit your photograph via USB Drive, the drive will not be returned to you.

Please note photographs must be submitted in high resolution format, minimum 300 dpi. All photographs with either vertical or horizontal orientation will be considered; however, please note that winning photographs will be used in an 8x10 calendar with horizontal orientation. Your photo may be altered to fit these dimensions if it is selected for inclusion.

Entries are limited to three per photographer. Sponsor reserves the right to reject entries that do not comply with these official rules. By entering, you indicate your unconditional agreement to, and acceptance of, these Official Rules and Sponsor’s decisions, which are final and binding. You cannot win a prize unless you comply with all requirements in these official rules.

Entrants may be asked to supplement their submission (such as with a paragraph about their photo or the highest resolution version of their photo) anytime on or after March 31, 2017.

Photos will be judged on originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact, artistic merit and subject matter relevance, except that the People’s Choice award will be determined based on which photograph receives the most public votes. Judging will be conducted by a panel of judges to be selected by Sibley Nature Center at its sole discretion (the “Panel”). The Panel will evaluate all valid entries and pick the winners in the following categories. Each photograph can win only one award with the exception of People's Choice, which may have been awarded by judges.

  1. Overall (3 winners: 1 first prize, 1 runner-up, 1 second runner-up): You’ve nailed it. Your images rise above the rest and encapsulate our theme.
  2. Categories:
    1. Wildlife (1 winner): Highlights an animal native to the Llano Estacado region
    2. Scenic Views (1 winner): Highlights a location in the Llano Estacado. Settings can be urban or rural.
    3. People’s Choice (1 winner): Overall winner selected from among the remaining entries based on the highest number of votes received during public voting to be held at Sibley Nature Festival in April 8, 2017.
    4. Honorable Mentions (6 honorable mentions will be selected): Images that showcase and illustrate the natural world.

All judging decisions are final. Please do not contact us about the status of entries or judging.

Sibley Nature Center will notify the winner via the contact information provided at the time of entry.
